CHARACTER
INFORMATION
Name:
Charmy
Nicknames:
"Fastest Insect in the World"
Race:
Bee
(Speculation: If you choose to get technical,
Charmy is probably a worker Honey Bee when you factor his evident ability
to pollinate, considering his relations with the warp flowers in Sonic
Heroes.)
Gender:
Male
Age:
6
Date of birth: Unknown
Birthplace:
Unknown
(Speculation: Isolated Island or Angel Island
maybe? Just logical suggestions.)
Height:
70 centimeters (2 feet and 3 inches)
Weight:
10 kilograms (22 pounds)
Physical
techniques:
(1). Spin Jump
Description: Also referred to as the "spinball jump,"
Charmy is able to leap into the air and curl into a spinning, tightly
compacted ball of destruction which can destroy enemies and break barriers.
In-game debut: Sonic Heroes, Nintendo GameCube/Sony PlayStation 2/Microsoft
Xbox, 2003
(2). Buzz Dash
Description: While in flight, Charmy is able to perform a quick
and abrupt dash in a linear path. This can be done in any direction
and is meant to attack foes or break barriers.
In-game debut: Knuckles' Chaotix, Sega 32X, 1995
Abilities
and aptitude:
(1). Of course, since Charmy is a bee, he can fly and hover about the
air for as long as he wants.
(2). He also flies quite fast; capable of making sudden boosts or darts
in his trajectory.
(3). Although, Charmy is generally docile, when he is angered, his stinging
tail is an extremely lethal weapon and he knows how to use it with speed
and agility. This is something Eggman found out the hard way.
Hobbies
and talents:
(1). Charmy may not be the most sophisticated out of his comrade
detectives, but when Charmy is onto a hunch, he is able to track down
almost anything. Out of the three of them, this little guy is definitely
the tracker of the motley crew.
(2). Has some strange talent of being able to pollinate and thus warp
between flowers (however, the flowers in Sonic Heroes were suspiciously
mechanical-like, so this could be unique to just those particular flowers).
(3). Plays a drum, although it's more of a hobby since his actual playing
questionable in quality and talent.
Weaknesses:
(1). Small size and frailty is a hindrance for larger and more
powerful foes.
(2). Although, he is fast in flight, Charmy can barely run. If
he tries to run, his on-feet motion eventually makes a transition into
flight. It's no big deal since he usually chooses to fly anyway.
(3). Charmy is incredibly mischievous, obnoxious, and immature. This
obscures his judgment and perspective at times.
Physical
Appearance:
- Charmy's body is striped in yellow and black, while black
takes up his head, waist, and legs
- Tan muzzle and arms
- Amber eyes
- Two club-shaped antennas coming out of his forehead, striped in yellow
and black
- Large, translucent blue bee wings
- Small, black and shiny nose
- Gray stinger on the end of his posterior
Attire:
- White gloves backed by thick black, ring-shaped cuffs
- Wears a black pilot's helmet with red trim that his antennas
can stick out of
- The helmet has integrated flight goggles that are brown with silver
and black accents, they are barely ever worn over Charmy's eyes
- Wears an orange vest with gold-colored zipper/zipper pull, white v-collar,
and a patch on the left chest area that depicts an odd bee symbol that
has no known meaning or significance
- Orange sneakers with gold-colored zipper/zipper pulls, black collars,
and white rubber soles
- Black… shoulder pads?
(not sure what those are)
Items
& weapons: Unless you want
to count his stinger, then Charmy has no weapons.
Vehicle(s):
N/A
Personality
details: Loud, rowdy, immature, scatterbrained, hilarious to
watch, mischievous, and hyper. These are the words that most aptly describe
one Charmy Bee of the Chaotix Detective Agency. Vector and Espio like
to see Charmy as just a cute kid mascot, but his tracking skills for
when he has a hunch are definitely of value to the Detective Agency's
success. Anyone would suspect such a conduct out of a 6 year old kid,
though. Especially when he hangs out with a near equally as childish
20 year old and a silent 16 year old. Their clashing personalities probably
leave a large impression on Charmy. Everything Charmy does is something
you'd suspect out of a 6 year old. He is always moving when he is awake;
hovering in the air and zooming back and forth and from side to side,
or flailing his legs when he is sitting. It is unknown as to whether
or not Charmy is just naturally hyper or if he eats a lot of sugar.
But the conduct has taken its toll on Espio and Vector since they sometimes
find Charmy's loud and obnoxious antics rather annoying. But Charmy
usually takes it to his advantage and bugs his two friends even more!
But in the end, Charmy is invaluable to the team and Vector and Espio
treat the little guy as an equal nonetheless, and express quite perceptibly
that he is a crucial part of the Chaotix Detectives.
Historical
biography:
Charmy's
past clashes right with Vector's, mostly in a sense that it is just
as blurry. However, like Vector and Mighty, Charmy was one of the three
first travelers to Eggman's newly-mounted Newtrogic High Zone that were
captured and thus frozen in time in Eggman's new Combi-Confiner. Why
he went, though? Charmy Bee went to the island on a quest for new flowers.
As
you've probably read in Vector and Espio's profile, Knuckles eventually
freed Espio, which soon led to the rescue of Charmy, Vector, and Mighty
as well.
As
stated with Vector and Espio, it is unknown as to whether or not the
three of them had the Chaotix Detective Agency going on beforehand or
after the Eggman/Newtrogic High Zone incident. But these days, the three
of them remain thick as thieves, ever vigilant as long as the price
is right and the work is fair and legal!
Personal
information:
Greatest friend(s): Vector the Crocodile,
Espio the Chameleon, Mighty
the Armadillo, and Knuckles the Echidna.
Other friend(s): Sonic the Hedgehog,
Miles "Tails" Prower, Amy
Rose, Cream the Rabbit & Cheese, Big
the Cat and Shadow the Hedgehog.
Rival(s): N/A
Enemy(s): Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik
and Metal Sonic.
Likes: Charmy likes goofing around a lot, whether it is just
zipping back and forth in mid-air, or deliberately bugging Vector and
Espio. He also likes the sun and honey from flowers.
Dislikes: Above all else, Charmy hates being bored or when
the atmosphere is dull and bland, which promotes boredom. It is highly
recommended that you avoid subjecting him to this pet-peeve of his,
since there is no telling what he'll do when he is real bored! He also
hates being made a fool of more than Espio, which is well evident considering
Charmy had absolutely NO problem attacking Eggman once he found out
the Chaotix was ripped off for their mission.
Favorite food(s): Unknown. Charmy is very hyper, so he probably
eats a lot of sweets and candy.
Favorite color(s): Unknown. Could be orange.
Occupation: Detective.
Place of residence: The Chaotix Detective Agency office.
GAME INFORMATION
Franchise name: Charmy
Bee
Original purpose: Supporting role in Knuckles' Chaotix.
Current purpose: Mascot of the Chaotix detectives;
supporting role.
Date of first promotion/presence in the industry: Charmy's
debut in the industry came along with the release of the 32x title,
Knuckles' Chaotix, released first in the US on March of 1995.
Years in service: 11, and still going…
Original Designer: Unconfirmed. Could've been any of
the six character designers for Knuckles' Chaotix.
Design process: Unconfirmed. Charmy's design process
was probably similar to how all of the others were made. Many design
sketches were made and Charmy was chosen. Simple as that. In fact, Charmy
was designed and named before Chaotix. His history is much like Amy's
in a sense that the Shogaku Yonensei Sonic manga had a bee character
named Charmy as well. The Charmy seen in Knuckles' Chaotix seems to
be the "prototype" Charmy from the manga except redesigned
for widescale promotion and for the games.
Possible design inspirations: The most obvious design
inspiration for Charmy was the fact that there was a character with
an identical name and species in the Shogaku Yonensei Sonic manga released
in 1992.

Personal character analysis/commentary (by Nuclear Envoy):
Charmy Bee is a unique character, as he is the only insect in the Sonic
Universe. Trying to pull off the Sonic-style appearance for an insect
was remarkably well done for Charmy. His personality is fitting for
his style, appearance and age, and his abilities are not far off the
scale from fair and original. Overall, Charmy is your basic, well-rounded
kid character.
However,
that's what I was so disappointed with. His descriptions in both the
American and Japanese manuals for Knuckles' Chaotix are generally
the same with the exception of age. (The old Chaotix Japanese manual
didn't tell Charmy's age. It's obvious the new Sonic Heroes renditions
of the characters were based off of the Japanese version of Knuckles'
Chaotix.) However, said descriptions were vague, which left room open
for a lot of edit for his personality in Sonic Heroes. Yet, Sonic Team
decided to make Charmy yet ANOTHER juvenile, cute kid character. Cream
and Tails are quite enough.
Luckily,
they managed to make the save by making Charmy, unlike Cream and Tails,
very mischievous and obnoxious. So basically, Charmy tipped the iceberg
for the children's character line-up. Now we have a clever, docile kid
character (Tails), a cute, well-mannered and sensitive one (Cream),
and a mischievous, scatterbrained one (Charmy). So in the end, it all
evens out. Hopefully that tops it off for children's characters.
In the long run, Charmy was much needed for the Chaotix to give some
diversity to the group, since Vector and Espio are both old and have
clashing personalities. Out of the kid characters, Tails is always liked
the most in the fanbase (even by me), but Charmy is definitely a good
second.
