Humans
in the world of Sonic the Hedgehog »
Even
though that unlike how there might be realistic animals in the Sonic
Universe, we know that there are humans. However, unlike the realistic
animals article, humans don't exist in the world of Sonic no matter
where he comes from. Humans existence in the Sonic world depends
solely on what continuity you're researching. This is a fairly short
article and is meant to just clean this mess up. What we're going to
do is go through every portrayal of Sonic and see how humans relate
to them. We'll start with the games.
Games:
With
Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Shadow the Hedgehog in mind,
there is absolutely no question that humans exist in the game-based
Sonic universe. Humans swamped these three games and have a very effective
role in the latter two. But what about the old games? Yes, human appearances
in the old games were much more elusive. In fact, it was the lack of
human appearances in the old games that make some fans think that the
old and new generations of Sonic are somehow separated, whether it be
by where Sonic comes from or just because they are two different portrayals.
However, humans were in some of the old Sonic games. It just takes whit
to spot them. Let's not forget Dr. Eggman either!
The
first old game a human other than Dr. Eggman appeared in was Tails'
Sky Patrol, which was released only in Japan: this works for us since
it shows that it applies to no other continuity but the Japanese one.
Witchkart is a human, so there's one. Next is Sonic Jam. But this hint
to humans lies within a hidden video on the disc known as the Sonic:
Man of the Year video. Humans are seen cheering Sonic on, talking
on the news, walking around the city (that is suspiciously Station Square-like),
and then detesting Sonic since his image was ruined and framed by Dr.
Eggman.
Whether
or not the Sonic: Man of the Year video was actually a Sega of Japan-made
video is suspicious, but odds are, it is. Some of the music and sound
effects in the movie were taken from Sonic CD… the Japanese version
of Sonic CD. Eggman and Sonic's design is also based off of the Sonic
Team designs. As for the humans? Their design is strikingly similar
to the cartoony, non-animeish style of Witchkart instead of anime-ish
like they are these days.
So
we can conclude that in the games, there are humans, especially since
they take place on an alternate EARTH.
Sonic X:
Sonic
X's involvement with humans is a little more complicated. In the games,
we have no known proof that Sonic comes from some other world without
humans since from the very start, his world has been called "Earth,"
and has seemed the same, so we can easily assume that the entire game
continuity; 1991 to now, has taken place on the same world. But in Sonic
X, the continuity has strictly emphasized that Sonic is not from the
Earth of the humans, but is instead from some other world. The premise
is simple, but the human's involvement is more complicated.
In
Sonic X, Sonic's world is devoid of humans with the exception of Dr.
Eggman, who seems to have unknown origins on Sonic's world. Nobody knows
where he came from. Obviously, since his relatives are on the Earth
of the humans (Gerald & Maria), then it's suffice to say he comes
from there. How he got to Sonic's world or why, however, is totally
unknown. But we can conclude that he wasn't always there.
As
stated, in the Sonic X continuity, there are no humans on Sonic's homeworld.
In the first episode, through an accident involving Chaos Control, the
Sonic cast is teleported to an alternate world where there are humans.
Sonic has absolutely no idea what they are and vice versa. So this shows
that Sonic isn't used to humans, meaning they weren't where he was from.
This world-to-world conveyance in the Sonic X continuity was meant primarily
to tie in with the Sonic Adventure series.
So
for Sonic X, there are humans on their own planet Earth. But on Sonic's
home world? No humans except Dr. Eggman.
Comics:
The
comics are more complicated than all of them. Fleetway, to be honest,
I don't know about. For what I gather, I haven't seen any other humans
in that comic other than Dr. Robotnik/Kintobor. So maybe there are none.
But for Archie, which I have read every issue of so far, I know that
humans exist on Mobius but they're involvement is far more complicated.
First
off, in Archie, there are two types of humans: Overlanders, and then
normal humans. The Overlanders are abundant on Mobius, but only dwell
in very minute concentrations. They have four fingers instead of five
and their origins are unknown. With the exception of their minor physical
deformity, they are just like humans: same size, same proportions, same
pros, same cons, same races, etc., etc. Most Overlanders are cruel and
war-mongoring, which is why they have quite a developed aversion towards
the Mobosapiens (Sonic, Tails, Sally, King Acorn, etc., etc.). And then
there are humans. Until Sonic Adventure, there were no humans in the
Archie comics. Humans were made in Archie to tie-in with their Sonic
Adventure adaptation to keep things official (even though making a Sonic
Adventure adaptation was a mistake in the first place). So how did they
work out the humans on Mobius?
In
Archie, believe it or not, Mobius is actually Earth
but in the future. 12,000+ years have passed since the year 2006 on
Archie, although the year is currently around 3235 in the comics, which
is because of the restart of the year count once the evolution of the
new Mobian races made it to an intelligent level. 2006 was when the
planet was called Earth and the only species that inhabited
it were the humans — just like now. However, as a result of the
humans imprisoning, executing, and then dissecting the carcass of an
alien courier who wanted to deliver a proposal of peace, the alien's
race retaliated by dropping Gene Bombs allover Earth. Pretty
much the entire human race was destroyed. In the post apocalyptic state,
seismic activity and clouds of ash & dust flying into the atmosphere
along with the remnants of the gene bombs is what boosted the evolution
of what used to be the animal kingdom into what is today the
Sonic characters.
The
only humans left in Archie exist at Station Square, AKA the Hidden
City of the Ancients. In Archie, Station Square is the last stronghold
of humans and is hidden within a mountain with a plane crashed into
its side (sound familiar?). The city's amazing technology can project
a virtual sky, ocean, and atmosphere even though it is actually underground.
So
yes, that's how it works in Archie. Humans are very rare and are only
left in Station Square, while the rest are four-fingered overlanders.
But nonetheless, there are humans in the Sonic Universe in Archie.
Sonic OAV:
This
is easy: In the Sonic OAV, there are humans. There is Eggman, Sara,
the president, and also the president's advisor. No big quarrel here.
Conclusion: In most portrayals of Sonic, humans do
exist in the environment. Only Sonic X has so far portrayed humans coming
from another world. So whether or not you implement humans into your
creation depends solely on what portrayal of Sonic you find the most
interest in. Plothole solved.
